Decision-making capacity in mental health: Exploratory research into the views of people with personal experience

20th December 2009, 12:49:45 UTC

The overall aim of the research was to explore issues related to decision-making
capacity and advance directives with people who have had personal experience of
impaired capacity in the context of a mental health issue. The research looked at three
levels of decision-making capacity: in relation to decisions with legal consequences
such as those about property, in relation to decisions about mental health treatment
and in relation to decisions of daily living. The research was conducted through indepth
interviews with eight participants all of whom have experience of mental health
treatment.
