Human rights defenders in Russia have always faced harassment, intimidation, physical attacks and arbitrary arrests for their work. However, in recent years the level and extent of the reprisals they face have increased significantly, to a point where being a human rights defender means risking your reputation, freedom and even your life. This publication provides a snapshot of the current dire situation through several stories. The Russian authorities must acknowledge and address these violations and ensure that human rights defenders are protected and can do their work without fear of persecution.
