Funds raised will support Amnesty International’s work to protect the human rights of refugees and migrants
Ireland’s Fittest Family presenter, Mairead Ronan and Amnesty International Ireland’s Executive Director Colm O’Gorman will this weekend take part in the Bray Cliff Run. Almost 2,000 runners are expected to take part in the 10 kilometer event which begins on Greystones beach, takes in the expansive views of the Dublin coastline along the cliff path and finishes on Bray beach.
“Every day, all over the world, many thousands of people leave their homes in search of a better life. Many are fleeing conflict and human rights abuses including the more than 6 million Syrians who have been displaced since the conflict began in 2011. As vast numbers embark on perilous journeys to Europe, the European Union has failed to offer a sustainable, long term solution to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and instead is content to ignore the rights and dignity of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Funds raised from this weekend’s event will provide essential support for Amnesty International’s ongoing work to protect the human rights of migrants & refugees in Europe and beyond,” said Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland.
“I’m delighted to be taking part in this weekend’s run, in support of Amnesty International’s campaign for refugee & migrant rights. I, like most people in Ireland, have been heartbroken at the images of refugees but in particular those of images of children who are desperately seeking safety in Europe. I recently read a quote which sums it up for me: “No one puts their children in a boat / unless the water is safer than the land”. I know that all the funds raised this weekend will provide vital support to Amnesty’s International work for refugees & migrants, one of the most vulnerable populations in the world,” said Mairead Ronan.
“We are delighted to have Amnesty International as our charity partner for this event. The Bray Cliff Run is an ideal event for both new and experienced runners who are looking for something different from a 10km run. The fundraising taking place around the event by Amnesty International will make a real difference in the lives of refugees around the world,” said Ciara Young, Killary Gaelforce.
