Members of Zimbabwean civil society organisations and opposition political parties have
been tortured and ill-treated by officers of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) over recent
months. Human rights activists have been arbitrarily arrested whilst participating in peaceful
demonstrations, and whilst in police custody hundreds have been tortured and experienced
other forms of ill-treatment at the hands of the ZRP, including beatings. Scores of activists
have sustained injuries as a result and often require medical treatment. However, police have
repeatedly denied them access to medical treatment.
